Lawyer Sandy Cohen brings on of his cases home with him as he notices himself in a kid who's situation was similar to Sandy's when he was younger. He offers to help Ryan Atwood, who was in a crashed stolen car driven by his brother, out if he ever needed a hand. Ryan's mother and boyfriend kick him out of their home as they find out he was arrested with his brother Trey. Ryan is at a loss and in seeks Sandy's help as desperation sinks in. Sandy invites Ryan back to the Cohen's allowing him to stay in the pool house and starting the main premise for the OC.
Ryan struggles to adjust to the rich lifestyle of the Cohen's and their lavish Newport residence. He quickly makes friends with Seth Cohen and next door neighbour Marissa Cooper. Ryan's quick temper and criminal record creates tension between the Cohen's and their superficial peers.
Sandy's faith in Ryan remains and, as his situation is emphasised by his abandonment and the bad state of his mother, the rest of the Cohen's warm toward Ryan and he becomes a part of their family.
