8 Simple Rules (8SR for short) is produced by ABC (part of the Disney cooperation). It spans three series with it first being aired in the U.S in 2002 and the final episode in 2005. One of the striking features of the show was the death of on of its main characters. John Ritter died whilst the second season of 8 simple rules was being filmed. The show continued, albeit in a slightly different angle, and encompassed the death with the death of the character in the show.
The show focuses on the lives of the Hennessey’s, a typical family consisting of a husband and wife, Paul (John Ritter) and Cate (Katey Sagal), and their three children, Rory (Martin Spanjers), Kerry (Amy Davidson) and Bridget (Kaley Cuoco).
Paul works from home and he spend a lot of time trying to keep track of his children especially the girls who manage to torment him with their relationships and bickering. Of the pair of girls Bridgett, the oldest, is the one who manages to irk Paul’s big problem with having teenage boys around his daughter. She is fairly superficial and revels in the fact that she manages to get on at school and in life due to popularity and good looks. Kerrey is less like Bridget, being smarter and less image conscious, but still manages to rebel. Rory enjoys unraveling the girl’s secrets and exposing them to either Paul or Cate. Paul looks to Rory for support as the only other male in the house, though even Rory tries to outsmart him at times.
After the death of John Ritter the show shifted focus slightly. There was the addition of two new characters. Jim Egan (James Garner), Cate's father was first. C.J. Barnes (David Spade), Cate's sister’s son then followed. Their addition dealt with the hole left by the loss of Paul Hennessy.
